For its fourth quarter ending 31 December 2020, global ecommerce giant Amazon reported net sales of USD125.6 billion, up 44% from USD87.4 billion in same period last year.

 Q4 2020

  • Net sales excluding the USD1.7 billion favorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter increased 42% in Q4 2020 compared to the previous year
  • North America net sales were USD75.34 billion versus USD53.67 billion in the prior-year period (+40%).
  • International net sales were USD37.46 billion versus USD23.81 billion in 2019 (+57%).
  • Amazon Web Services saw net sales of USD12.74 billion against USD9.95 billion a year previous (+28%).
  • Operating income increased to USD6.9 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with USD3.9 billion in Q4 2019.
  • Net income increased to USD7.2 billion, versus USD3.3 billion in Q4 2019.
  • Operating cash flow grew 56% to USD55.3 billion for the trailing 12 months, compared with USD35.3 billion for the trailing 12 months ended 30 September 2019.
  • North America contributed 60% of sales (-1% YoY), while International YoY contribution was at 30% (+3% YoY). AWS contributed 10% (-2%). 

FY2020

  • Total net sales were USD386.1 billion versus USD280.5 billion in the prior-year period (+38%).
  • North America net sales were USD236.282 billion versus USD170.773 billion in the prior-year period (+38%).
  • International net sales were USD104.41 billion versus USD74.72 billion in 2019 (+40%).
  • Amazon Web Services saw net sales of USD45.37 billion against USD35.02 billion a year previous (+30%).
  • Operating income increased to USD22.9 billion compared to USD14.5 billion in FY 2019.
  • Net income increased to USD21.3 billion, compared to USD11.6 billion in Q4 2019.
  • Free cash flow increased to USD31.0 billion for the trailing 12 months ended 31 December 2020, compared with USD25.8 billion for the same period last year.
  • The sales mix of North American, International and AWS segments remained unchanged with 61%, 27% and 12% of the sales respectively.

 Q1 2021 Guidance 

  • Net sales are expected to be between USD100 billion and USD106 billion, or to grow between 33% and 40% compared with Q1 2020. Retailer has also assumed a favorable impact of approximately 300 basis points from foreign exchange rates for this guidance
  • Operating income is expected to be between USD3 billion and USD6.5 billion compared with USD4 billion in Q4 2020.
  • The cost related to Covid-19 is assumed as USD2.0 billion for the period while the retailer does not assume any additional business acquisitions, investments, restructurings, or legal settlements.
